Welcome!

Ancient Music at Oxford is an organization, based at the University of Oxford, dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of all different elements of ancient music, their reception, and performance. We approach the scholarship of ancient music from a variety of angles, exploring the vast and diverse world of ancient musical thought and performance. Our work offers multifaceted insight into how ancient Greek music might once have been heard, felt, and understood.

We are dedicated to promoting ancient music as both a scholarly and practical pursuit, drawing on surviving ancient sources including literary, linguistic, philosophical, archaeological, and musical evidence from antiquity. As a fundamentally interdisciplinary specialty, we seek to demonstrate how collaboration between scholarship and creative practice can animate the past, allowing every audience, from other specialists to the general public, to encounter ancient music as a living art.

Our main events include a yearly seminar series that connects global scholars with an interest in ancient music, an annual concert of ancient music, and conferences and events throughout the year.
